What defines a “cult classic”? It’s a film that has achieved iconic status either through notoriety or because they’re just plain weird. People who love those types of movies can probably quote them line-for-line. Here are a few movies that definitely fit this category.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show”

Movies like this one come with their own peculiar fandom as well. Screenings of “Rocky Horror” feature call-and-response prompts, elaborate costumes, and pantomiming the onscreen antics as they play.

“The Princess Bride”

This film came out in 1987 and has been charming viewers ever since. It has many iconic lines like “Inconceivable!” and the immortal “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” Audiences swoon whenever Westley says “As you wish.” Those who’ve seen the movie know that what he’s really saying is “I love you.”

“The Big Lebowski”

Who knew that bowling would be such a big deal? It certainly is for Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski. This is one of Jeff Bridge’s most famous roles. “The Dude” must navigate mistaken identity, dream sequences, and kidnapping in the seedy world of 1990s Los Angeles, making time to train for a bowling tournament along the way.

“The Room”

No list of cult films would be complete without what is arguably the worst movie of all time. It has very little plot. Instead a series of incoherent stories are all loosely strung together without much sense. The genre is unclear. The acting is terrible. There are many technical flaws. Yet somehow “The Room” has become a fixture at midnight showings across the country.

“Monty Python and the Holy Grail”

The comedy troupe Monty Python has contributed much to the canon. Their greatest work might just be the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” It is a humorous interpretation of the legend of, well, the Holy Grail. King Arthur’s loyal knights go in search of the famed cup. They contend with The Knights Who Say Ni. Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot tries to find his courage. He and his fellow Knights attempt to cross the Bridge of Death as the quest comes to a close. Spoiler alert: not all of them survive.
